This week, our Year 6 pupils took part in the Richmond Council Road Safety Team’s Bikeability cycle training programme. Guided by the team’s expert instructors, the children spent the week developing their cycling skills, road awareness and confidence whilst navigating local roads.
Bikeability, the national standard for cycle training, equips young people with the knowledge and practical skills needed to become safe and thoughtful cyclists. Throughout the course, pupils learned how to carry out essential bike safety checks, signal clearly, position themselves safely on the road and negotiate junctions with confidence. Beginning with off-road practice before progressing onto quieter local streets, the training offered valuable real-world experience in a supportive environment.
Beyond the practical skills, the programme encouraged independence, responsibility and an understanding of safe, active travel. It was wonderful to see the pupils grow in confidence over the course of the week, whilst developing important lifelong habits that will help them travel safely and responsibly.
