At Hampton Court House, wellbeing is not an addition to school life, it is at the very heart of it. We are committed to creating an environment in which every student feels valued, heard and supported, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally.
Our ethos is rooted in inclusivity and individuality. A culture without uniform and the use of first names between students and teachers fosters a sense of openness, mutual respect and authenticity. Combined with small class sizes, this allows strong, trusting relationships to develop, ensuring that every student is truly known and supported. In this environment, barriers to learning are reduced, students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes and grow, and a genuine sense of belonging is cultivated across the school.
A Culture of Belonging
Student voice plays a central role in shaping life at HCH. Pupils are encouraged to share their ideas and contribute meaningfully to the development of the school community. This sense of ownership helps to build confidence, self-worth and connection.
Initiatives led by our student Wellbeing Champions are a powerful example of this. These students act as approachable first points of contact for their peers, while also driving wellbeing initiatives across the school. From introducing the Wellbeing Room to welcoming Leo, our much-loved wellbeing dog, their contributions have helped to create a supportive and responsive environment where students feel truly listened to.
Wellbeing Spaces and Everyday Support
The Wellbeing Room is a valued part of daily school life, open Monday – Thursday lunchtimes as a calm and welcoming space for students to pause, reflect and recharge. Designed as a quieter alternative to the busy school environment, it offers a range of gentle, mindful activities such as puzzles, colouring, origami and crafts, alongside calming music and a relaxing atmosphere.
Students are free to access the space as needed, whether to take a moment for themselves or simply enjoy a quieter setting. Many find it becomes a regular and reassuring part of their routine.
Professional Care and Guidance
Alongside peer support, students benefit from access to professional wellbeing services within the school. Our on-site counsellor provides therapeutic emotional support tailored to individual needs, whether through short check-in sessions or longer-term one-to-one support.
This provision is underpinned by a collaborative approach, working closely with families and staff to ensure that each young person is supported holistically. At its core is the belief that students often hold the answers within themselves, and with the right support and guidance, can develop the confidence and self-awareness to navigate challenges positively.
Strong Pastoral Care
Every student at HCH is part of a small form group, led by a dedicated tutor who takes the time to understand each individual. Tutors are approachable, attentive and committed to ensuring that every student feels happy, supported and heard.
This is further strengthened by a clear pastoral structure across the school, with each phase supported by a Head of School who plays an active role in daily student life. Working closely with the SENDCo and safeguarding team, they ensure that wellbeing remains a priority and that every student feels safe, secure and valued.
Practising What We Preach
Throughout the year, activities are woven through the academic and co-curricular programme. Positive wellbeing is celebrated during, but is not limited to, Mental Health Awareness Week, with activities including creating lavender bags and planting in the Wellbeing Garden, yoga, meditation and mindful movement / breathing sessions, walks round the lake, dance sessions, staff singing lessons and competitions alongside crafts including stone decorating, plate paining, creating suncatchers and leaf printing.
A Balanced Approach to Education
At Hampton Court House, we believe that academic success and wellbeing go hand in hand. By nurturing strong relationships, encouraging student voice and providing meaningful support, we create a community in which students feel confident in themselves and connected to those around them.
The result is an environment where young people are not only able to achieve academically, but also grow into socially and emotionally confident individuals, ready to navigate the world with resilience, empathy and self-belief.
