Prep Curriculum

Learning at HCH Prep is carefully tailored to meet the needs of each individual child. We recognise that no two learners are the same, and we place great importance on ensuring that every pupil is both challenged and supported in the right way for them.

Our approach encourages curiosity, independence and resilience, helping children to develop strong foundations across all areas of learning. Academic progress is celebrated alongside creativity, collaboration and personal growth, ensuring a truly well-rounded educational experience. Class sizes are no larger than 18 pupils, allowing for strong, trusting relationships between staff and children, and enabling the personalised, closely observed approach that sits at the heart of HCH.

A defining feature of the Prep curriculum is our LabelFrancÉducation accredited French immersion programme. In Years 1 to 4, pupils are immersed in a bilingual learning environment, enabling children to develop strong language skills naturally, while also opening their minds to new cultural perspectives. As pupils progress through the programme, support is carefully adapted so that all children are carried forward together on their language learning journey, building confidence, fluency and curiosity in equal measure. Naturally embraced by the children, this formative stage of their education provides benefits at many levels: The Early French Immersion programme to Year 4 enhances language literacy, cognitive development, problem-solving, and creativity. it also opens the door to myriad future opportunities to travel, study and work. Children joining us in Year 3 and 4 can select a non French pathway should they wish.

Alongside the core curriculum, pupils benefit from a rich programme of specialist teaching and experiences. From Ballet (Year 1 and 2) and dance (Year 3+) with expert practitioners, to Music, Art and Drama, children are given regular opportunities to explore creativity, expression and performance in inspiring ways.

In the earliest years of Prep, pupils have the opportunity to engage with the outdoor world via our on-site Forest School, a dedicated natural environment where pupils learn through exploration, curiosity and carefully managed challenge. Led by specialist Forest School practitioners, these sessions help children develop resilience, independence and teamwork, while fostering a deep appreciation of the natural world. For Years 1 and 2, swimming also forms an important part of the curriculum and takes place offsite under the guidance of experienced instructors, supporting water confidence, safety and physical development.

Years 5 & 6

From Year 5, academic goals are brought into sharper focus as students begin their journey towards their Senior years, and we are present to guide them at every point along the way. Led by expert, subject-specialist teachers, we continue to extend their subject repertoire, adding Latin and Mandarin to their appreciation of languages .
