Pupils in Years 3–6 travelled to the Barbican to experience a fantastic performance by the London Symphony Orchestra as part of the LSO Discovery Programme.
Ahead of the visit, the children had been preparing for the concert in music lessons, following a recent CPD session attended by Despina with conductor Tim Redmond. This learning helped pupils gain a deeper understanding of the music they would hear and enhanced their enjoyment of the experience.
The concert, Music and the Movies, explored the important role music plays in storytelling on screen. Closely linked to our Listening and Appreciation curriculum, the programme featured iconic music from films including Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Polar Express, Pirates of the Caribbean, How to Train Your Dragon and Skyfall. Pupils listened attentively as they discovered how composers use music to create atmosphere, emotion and excitement.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for audience participation. The children enthusiastically joined hundreds of other young people in singing alongside the orchestra during Duel of the Fates from Star Wars, creating a truly memorable musical moment.
The trip provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to experience a world-class orchestra performing live and further develop their appreciation and understanding of music. It was an inspiring day that brought many of the concepts explored in the classroom to life.
