The Year 10 Design & Technology students had an inspiring and eye-opening visit to the Clerkenwell Design Week, where they explored the very heart of contemporary design, innovation and creative thinking. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to speak directly with designers, makers, architects and engineers from a wide range of industries, gaining valuable insight into the real world of design and technology beyond the classroom.
Students explored cutting-edge ideas surrounding sustainable materials, innovative joining methods, advanced workplace technologies, and emerging manufacturing processes. They discovered how designers are pushing boundaries through environmentally conscious approaches, including fascinating new developments such as eco-friendly paint alternatives and sustainable material finishes. The experience encouraged students to think more openly, creatively and fearlessly about their own future designs.
The trip also provided a fantastic introduction to the commercial and entrepreneurial side of the design industry. Students learned about branding, client work, product development and the importance of adaptability and innovation within modern design careers. This visit forms an important starting point and source of primary research for their own design work next year.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing sustainability and innovation combined in fun and unexpected ways, including nutritious sugar-free ice cream innovations and healthy smoothies, which students absolutely enjoyed. The atmosphere throughout the event was energetic, inspiring and full of creativity, and students embraced every opportunity to ask questions, interact with exhibitors and immerse themselves in new ideas.
The students represented the school brilliantly and were so engaged with the experience that many requested we stay even longer next time. After a full day of information, inspiration and excitement, the journey back to school was noticeably quieter, with several students enjoying a very well-deserved nap on the train after what can only be described as an inspiring overload of ideas, creativity and innovation.
