At Hampton Court House, we believe some of the most important learning happens beyond the classroom.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gives young people the opportunity to discover just how capable they are — encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, take on new challenges and develop the confidence and resilience that will stay with them long after school.
Through the DofE programme, students build far more than expedition skills. They learn how to lead, collaborate, problem-solve and persevere when things become difficult. They develop independence, communication skills and a sense of responsibility, whilst also discovering new interests, supporting their communities and learning to navigate unfamiliar situations with confidence. These are the qualities that universities, employers and, most importantly, life itself increasingly demand.
The expeditions are often where this growth becomes most visible. Last weekend, our Silver DofE participants completed their practice expedition in the beautiful New Forest, trekking nearly 30 miles across three days whilst carrying 9–13kg of kit on their backs. Along the way, they tested their navigation and camping skills, embraced the unpredictability of the outdoors and supported one another through every stage of the journey. From wild ponies grazing across the heathlands to evenings spent cooking together at camp, it was an experience filled with challenge, camaraderie and genuine achievement.
Earlier this term, our Year 9 Bronze cohort undertook their qualifying expedition in the Surrey Hills. Following a day of preparation, students set off on a two-day adventure which saw them practising map reading, orienteering, tent building and navigation, whilst learning the importance of teamwork, resilience and self-reliance. Carrying their own equipment and working together to complete the expedition pushed students both physically and mentally, helping them grow in confidence and determination throughout the experience.
What makes the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award so valuable is not simply the certificate at the end, but the experiences, memories and personal growth gained along the way. It encourages young people to challenge themselves, support others and realise they are capable of far more than they first imagined.
A huge thank you to our DofE Manager, Sam Dykes, for his dedication, encouragement and leadership in providing these opportunities for our students.
