Forest School at HCH

At Hampton Court House, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door, it flourishes outdoors.

Forest School is a much-loved and distinctive part of Early Years life, offering pupils the time, space and freedom to learn within the natural world. With Bushy Park quite literally on our doorstep and our own Forest School area onsite, pupils benefit from a richly wooded environment that sparks curiosity, builds confidence and brings learning to life.

Forest School sessions invite pupils to learn by doing. From constructing shelters and identifying plants and wildlife, to creating art from natural materials and tackling collaborative challenges, children are immersed in hands-on experiences that encourage creative thinking and problem-solving. Guided by our specialist Forest School practitioners, pupils are supported to work independently, take measured risks and develop resilience: skills that positively shape both their academic journey and personal growth.

Outdoor learning at Hampton Court House nurtures far more than knowledge alone. Time spent in nature plays a vital role in supporting wellbeing, helping pupils to feel calm, focused and connected. Through Forest School, children grow in confidence as they persevere through challenges, communicate with peers, and explore their own ideas. They also develop a deep respect for the environment, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the natural world.

Our unique setting beside the vast landscapes of Bushy Park offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor learning. Woodlands, meadows and waterways become living classrooms- spaces for scientific investigation, imaginative storytelling, artistic inspiration and exploration. Combined with our dedicated Forest School area within the school grounds, outdoor learning is seamlessly woven into everyday life at HCH and across the curriculum. Forest School reflects a wider philosophy at Hampton Court House: that learning should be active, joyful and connected to the world around us.
