Headmaster’s Introduction

Dear Parents,

As the sun beat down on us this week (especially today!) we took great solace in having such a beautiful site to find shade and respite from the heat. It was also lovely to sit outside for lunch, and for some of the lessons.

There are many highlights this week, which I hope you enjoy reading about below. Special congratulations to some of our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils who won awards at the University of Roehampton TeenTech Festival. Well done to Year 7 (Mimi, Eliana, Noah and Raffy for winning the Best Domestic Space smart building design, and to Year 8 (Can, Edie, Alex and Pollyanna) for winning the Best Business Space smart building design. We are very proud of you!

The Friends have done a fabulous job organising the Summer Fete, and I hope to see many of you at HCH on Sunday between 1-4pm. In addition to the raffle (which has some amazing prizes!), one of our vendors will be auctioning two original signed drawings from children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler, which I am sure will be collector’s items in the future. If you are able to assist at all on the day, your help would be most welcome.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families.

With best wishes,

Adrian

News from across the school
Storytelling workshops

On Wednesday, the Lower Years were delighted to welcome the French author Sandra Lanilis, alongside Romain Devaux (French attaché at the French Embassy) and Marie De Crécy (from the publishing house Supereditions). Sandra is currently doing a book tour around some lucky schools in the UK. She kindly read and explained page by page her story Le chat volant (The flying kitten) which follows a kitten with a mouse BFF whose dream is to be able to fly. Sandra then called on the creativity of our pupils as each one of them got a blank copy of her book containing only the story: each child got to be the illustrator of their own, unique copy. It was fantastic to witness how much each and every one created and filled up the pages with beautiful drawings. Sandra, Romain and Marie were there to help and interact in French with the pupils, who all had a fabulous experience. Seeing the excitement when they were told the books were of course theirs to keep, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear they also read the French story to you that evening, alongside some comments of their take on the story! We would like to thank again the French Institute for gifting us these amazing workshops.

Reception adventure to the Palace

Reception went on an adventure to Hampton Court Palace yesterday looking for minibeasts (they’re now experts on all things minibeast!) and learning how the bees pollinate the beautiful wildflowers.

Year 1’s weaving

Year 1 really enjoyed weaving in Art this week! They have been learning about Ghanaian Kente cloth and how it is made, and they each had a turn at weaving on a loom, a very traditional machine and they were delighted to be able to create their own fabric.

Year 9’s Hindu temple visit

On Thursday, the students of Year 9 had the opportunity to discover a hidden gem outside London: George Harrison’s former house, now converted into a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. The students participated in workshops, tried traditional clothing, visited the grounds including the cow farm and tasted a delicious Indian meal cooked specially for them. They also assisted in a powerful worshipping ceremony. What an unforgettable day!

Year 2’s morning with Paddington

Year 2 children enjoyed reading their class reader ‘Paddington’ outside under the trees in their lesson today. They had an extra special guest with them – Paddington himself!

Wellbeing Group Meeting

We would like to invite you to join our Wellbeing Group Meeting on Wednesday 22 June from 4.10 – 5.10pm. We are a group of teachers, students, and parents coming together to discuss the wellbeing of our community.
