In Our Community Garden

Posted: 29th September 2025

It has been a beautiful week of weather and perfect to get out into the Community Garden again. Last week, we started the term by preparing ‘lasagne pots’ of bulbs which we made for the Little Courtyard. We layered tulips, daffodils, iris, and crocus bulbs which will then bloom (in reverse order!) from February onwards.

This week, we started club with a mini beast hunt and found some wonderful creatures, including a quabble of woodlice and two interesting looking beetles, including what we suspect is a larva for a stag beetle. We talked about the importance of respecting the garden creatures, and the students were mindful of this as they completed their search. Afterwards we harvested lavender, taking the now dried seeds from the heads and making Autumnal themed lavender bags. Finally, as a treat at the end of the day, we picked all the raspberries from our plants in the garden and had an afternoon snack!

The Community Garden is open to everyone; teachers, students, and parents. Please feel free to walk in; it is located by the Art Block and behind the hut at the East Gate entrance. At present, there is chard to harvest as well as the raspberries, and you are welcome to take some to sample HCH grown produce. We do ask that you don’t touch or pick anything else in the garden, but please enjoy the space as somewhere to sit quietly and soak up the sounds and sights of Autumn!

If you would more information or to help out from time to time with the garden, please email Hannah: Hyelland.robertsExternal@hchnet.co.uk
