Lower years poetry recital

Children from Lower Years had a go at memorising lines of a poem related to spring that they had either chosen or written in English or French. They then recited those lines on Monday and in doing so they learnt about poetry, its rhymes, rhythm and discovered new vocabulary. Reciting poetry places emphasis on the sound and the rhythm of language, thus building a child’s phonemic awareness and helps to solidify a foundation for reading. Benefits of reciting poetry are multiple and an additional bonus is that pupils gain confidence in public speaking skills. Early exposure helps make children feel more at ease with taking on new challenges, meeting new people and networking.
