Tristram read Mathematics at Oxford University, then worked in the Operational Research Department of The National Coal Board. He later taught Mathematics and was Head of IT at Dulwich College. He became Head of Mathematics at Westminster School and later a Housemaster and then Under Master (Deputy Head).

In 1994 he became Headmaster of Emanuel School. From 1998 to 2005 he was the Headmaster of Westminster School. From 2006 to 2008 he was Manager of the Oxfordshire Further Mathematics Centre which involved delivering the Further Mathematics curriculum in numerous maintained schools around Oxfordshire. He is also a Governor of Walworth Academy and Compass School, Southwark.
