Simon de PinnaBSc, PGCE, MEd

  • Biology

After gaining his BSc in biology from Birmingham University in the mid-1970s, Simon began a research career within the microbiology department. But within a few years he decided that his vocation lay in enthusing others about science rather than making discoveries himself! He gained his PGCE from Oxford University and a Masters degree from the University of Warwick before spending the ’80s teaching biology to young people from 5-18 in both the state and private sectors.

In the mid-80s, Simon joined a team of science teachers to write and publish a ground-breaking secondary science course called Warwick Process Science, which transformed the teaching of science in hundreds of schools for the next 10 years. A career in educational publishing followed, including several years as Managing Editor for an educational website company.

In the early 2000s, Simon foresaw the learning opportunities with mobile phones and set up his own company to promote the production of some early mobile apps. But from the mid-2000s, as the market for these was taken over by much bigger suppliers, Simon decided to divide his time between his twin passions of biology tutoring and selling contemporary art, particularly landscapes and cityscapes, which he now sells through his gallery website and at pop-up exhibitions.
