A full time chess coach and chess author, Richard co-founded Richmond Junior Chess Club, and managed the Richmond Chess Initiative. He is Webmaster of chessKIDS academy, a website for children learning chess, their parents and teachers. He has been teaching chess to children since the early 1970s.

Richard has taught all levels from beginners to world champions (he helped to prepare Luke McShane for the World U10 Championship). His most recent book, Chess for Kids, was published by Right Way Books in 2010. He is also the author of Move One!, a chess course for children, and co-author of The Complete Chess Addict and The Even More Complete Chess Addict.

Outside chess, Richard enjoys listening to classical and folk music, cryptic crosswords, contract bridge, reading contemporary fiction, genealogy and local history.
