HCH staff and students cricket match 2016

Friday 1st July witnessed the sporting behemoth that is the Staff and Students Cricket match. Last year’s inaugural edition, whereby the staff narrowly beat the students, provided all the motivation required. This year, we adopted mixed teams to accommodate students as young as Year 5, and the result was a close-fought game that will live long in the memory.

Conscious of potential weather interruptions, the game took place in five over innings, with Tom Robson’s All-Stars taking on Keegan Martin’s Globetrotters. The high standard of batting, bowling and fielding was testament to the hard work the sports department have been putting in during their weekly sessions, as well as the huge turnouts at lunchtime Cricket Club. Some of the most accomplished cricketers on show had barely bowled a ball in anger in April. The fact that batsmen were more likely to be ‘out’ than stay ‘in’ gave the game an added topicality.

In such a close-fought game it is hard to select standout performances, but Umpire Ben Ruddin nominated Jordan’s (Y12) blistering on-drive as Shot of the Day, Haydn (Y12) and his direct hit run-out as Fielding of the Day, and Danial’s (Y10) excellent caught-and-bowled as Catch of the Day. Delivery of the Day went to Tom ‘You’re History’ Roberts for clean bowling the master-blaster Andrei for a second-ball duck. The overall Champagne Moment was awarded to Gerard (Y10) for finally gaining revenge for years of maths homework by bowling Daniela Mingham.

It was a fantastic evening, conducted in excellent spirits. The fact that we had Y5 to Y12 as well as a variety of teachers playing is testament to the ethos of HCH, and I for one hope that this annual tradition continues for many years to come.
