HCH Maths Advent Calendar 2019

It is the season to be jolly and you have reason to be even more jolly as the HCH maths advent calendar is back!
Children from Reception Class to Year 13 are being given a different maths class each day to discuss and explore with their parents. For each correct entry a child’s name is entered into a prize draw which will take place on the last day of the term
The maths department wishes everyone a harmonious, calm and jolly lead up to Christmas.

Examples of tasks:
Reception and Lower Years:
Find something in your kitchen that weighs less than 400 grams.

Ideas for parents (choose the appropriate level for your child):
– explain that we use grams and kilograms as units
– explain 1000g = 1kg and ask what they could use to weigh an ant, a dog, a pig…..
– let them estimate the weight of various items and then weigh them
– have a discussion about Santa’s weight
( any observations from exploring this topic are welcome on the answer sheet)

Middle/Upper Years and Sixth Form:
Sue is orienteering. She goes 1 km North, then 2 km East, then 3 km South, then 4 km West. In what direction must she go to return to the start?
