Global Goals Project with Hampton Court Palace

Years 1 and 2 children are taking part in a project with Hampton Court Palace to support Global Goals for Sustainable Development www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment.

The children are working on Global Goal 15, Life on Land:

“Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.”

We have adapted this target to suit the children in this Humanities programme. The aim of the project is to increase children’s understanding and respect of the environment by learning to grow their own vegetables.

On Tuesday we started session one: planting activity – peas and beans. The session took place in the kitchen garden at Hampton Court Palace. We were very lucky with the weather and the children enjoyed gardening under the March sun. They then had a discussion on the importance of eating seasonal fruit and vegetables following by a sketching session.

It was a lovely morning for all of us, the children so enjoyed their outing! The second session will take place on Thursday 8 June. The children will harvest the vegetables that they have planted and will take some home to eat.
