mona lisa 200x300 The Value of ArtDominic gave an assembly this morning citing the Mona Lisa an example. Today the Mona Lisa is one of the most famous and valuable pieces of artwork on the planet; when it went missing from the Louvre in 1911 the entire French police force was mobilised to find it. However, when Leonardo da Vinci first tried to sell the Mona Lisa, no one would buy it. Henry VIII who heard of it but never saw it, felt it was an unlovely thing. When Francis I bought the Mona Lisa it wasn’t out of desire to own the painting, but to bring Leonardo to France. This raises the question, do we value Art in its own right or as the work of the Artist?
